Millinery Hack: 5 must have tools and gadgets

Millinery Hack: 5 must have tools and gadgets

By on 5, Apr, 2025

It’s been a while between blogs…. today I am back sharing my top 5 game changing non-millinery tools that help me work smarter — not harder. These clever gadget hacks can level up your own creations and make a difference when it comes to quality, precision and getting the job done right.

Here’s where you can purchase these super helpful (and affordable) gadgets or watch the Instagram reel for tips on how I use them….

1 – POINTED TWEEZERS
Used for: extracting tough eyebrow hairs or splinters

How I use them: These are so thin on the end and are great for precision tasks like poking elastic into small holes, picking off small pieces of glue or tucking in thread ends.

2 – PLASTIC PAINT SCRAPER
Used for: scraping paint off surfaces

How I use them: I find this tool so handy to help release blocking materials when they are stuck to the block. Because it’s bendy and thin you can get around curved edges and ease a hat from it’s block without stretching or bending it out of shape.

3 – QUILTING CLIPS and HAIR CLIPS
Used for: holding down fabric when sewing

How I use them: These are one of my most used items. When you can’t pin into a headpiece you can use wadding and then clip these to hold down leather as you cover a base. They are also useful when holding down edges, bias binding or ribbon. They have a curved edge so if you need to hold down wire or something thin I use the flat hairclips. Make sure you use some wadding or I use Fosshape offcuts under the clips for leather so the clips don’t make a dent.

4 – MARKING GAUGE and GAUGE RULER
Used for: woodwork measurements and sewing hems

How I use them: These is a useful tool for brims and cutting off edges in a straight line. The marking gauge will create a thin scratch line to show you where to cut. The gauge ruler requires you to mark your own edging with an erasable pen or texta.

5 – CURVED SCISSORS
Used for: cutting pet hair

How I use them: The curved edge means that these scissors are helpful when you need to cut out circles, holes for head fittings or lining fabric.
